Living Room Makeover!

A more appropriate title would be living/dining room/ kitchen makeover. Yup, while Andrew was away, I attacked the biggest room in our house. Remember that dark grey color I mentioned that was in our master bedroom before I painted it? Well our living room was painted that same grey. It didn't look as dark in this room because of all the natural light, but still, it was to dark for my taste. I like my wall colors to be light and fresh feeling. I also found that the shade of grey was hard to work with regarding accents in the room. No matter what color I tried (purple throw pillows, green, yellow, beige) nothing quite looked right. The color always seemed to be a little off. So, once Andrew was out the door for his trip, I started prepping for a living room makeover.

The color choice was easy. I had left over paint from our master bedroom, and not wanting to waste it (or have to pay for new paint), I decided to use it.

Here is a picture of our living room before I started painting

Edging in this room was really hard. The previous owners did an awful job painting. They got paint all over the ceiling, baseboards and trim.

It took three coats, and lots of extra attention to get that trim looking good. I must admit that the light walls gave me kind of a shock. I gave it a night, then decided to re-arrange some things in the morning once the shock had kind of worn off. All it took was switching one picture and I was instantly inspired.

I put some funky fabric on our white end table
The kitchen got some new pictures leaning against the dark back splash. Remember that frame I looted from my Parents last weekend? It looks perfect in the kitchen.

My favorite part of my new living room is this wall of bright pictures. Theses were free printables off the internet from here
I put some brighter books on the top shelf and new fabric

My yellow end table got some new things added to it, and a picture hung behind it
I added some new things to my wooden tray

And there you have it. Our new living room completed. I was so excited when I started putting things with color in the room (especially the free printables). With the old grey I dreaded trying out a new accent color because I knew that it would probably look funny and I would want to change it again right away. The new color is so light and neutral that pretty much any color that I chose to accent with will work! And the cost of re-doing this large room was totally in our budget with the grand total being $13.00. Not bad eh. So what are your thoughts? Is my new room cozy and inviting?

  1. I can't believe what you get done around your house in such short time periods! I read to Mike part of your master bedroom painting post - "starting off" your day by painting the bedroom.. That would be an entire day/weekend job for us!
I gotta say, I loved the grey in your house (at least in pictures), but do appreciate the new light & airy feel, especially with all the great colours. Good job!

  2. I always really appreciate your posts Laura! I wish I could get as inspired as you. I must say that I could relate to crappy painting jobs by previous owners. The trim in our place was all messy too. I've been slowly re-doing the trim as we have been painting. :)
